This page on the Present & Past of the Preserve is being developed.
Recent times Here will be the story of how the natural areas along the lake became the Lakeshore Nature Preserve and the role of the Friends in this development. The Friends organization was formed in 2001. Early importance The importance of the Preserve as a special natural area in an urban setting was recognized already by John Muir when he studied at the University of Wisconsin. Half a century later, Aldo Leopold, who taught wildlife ecology at the university and used the Preserve lands in his teaching and research, played a key role in efforts top protect the natural landscapes. |
